Yesterday the Washington Times<\/a> posted a story about illegal activity on the part of government employees at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

The Treasury Department<\/a> has admitted for the first time that confidential tax records of several political candidates and campaign donors were improperly scrutinized by government officials, but the Justice Department<\/a> has declined to prosecute any of the cases.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Senator Chuck Grassley<\/a> (R-Iowa) has asked Attorney General<\/a> Eric H. Holder Jr.<\/a> for an explanation of the lack of prosecutions. Senator Grassley has asked for a reply before July 26.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough this may not be indicative of wide spread targeting, any instance is cause for concern,\u201d Mr. Grassley<\/a> wrote. \u201cEven more alarming, in at least one instance TIGTA<\/a> referred evidence of \u2018willful unauthorized access\u2019 to the United States Attorney\u2019s Office<\/a>, but criminal prosecution was declined. Decisions such as these directly impact the political process and should be subject to the scrutiny of the American<\/a> public.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The IRS<\/a> did not respond to a request for comment on Mr. George<\/a>\u2019s findings.<\/strong><\/p>\n
