{"id":19005,"date":"2013-05-30T16:35:35","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T20:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=19005"},"modified":"2013-05-30T16:35:35","modified_gmt":"2013-05-30T20:35:35","slug":"a-move-toward-honest-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=19005","title":{"rendered":"A Move Toward Honest Elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2013\/05\/30\/wisconsin-appeals-court-voter-photo-id-constitutional\/\">Fox News<\/a> is reporting today that a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Wisconsin\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=44.5,-89.5&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=44.5,-89.5 (Wisconsin)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Wisconsin<\/a> appeals court has upheld a law requiring voters to show a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Photo identification\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photo_identification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">photo ID<\/a> when voting.<\/p>\n<p>However, as the article reports, we are not out of the woods yet:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Republican lawmakers passed voter photo ID requirements two years ago, saying the move was needed to combat election fraud. The league wasn&#8217;t the only group that challenged the law. The immigrant rights group Voces de la Frontera and the Milwaukee branch of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"National Association for the Advancement of Colored People\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naacp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">National Association for the Advancement of Colored People<\/a> also filed a lawsuit in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Dane County, Wisconsin\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=43.07,-89.42&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=43.07,-89.42 (Dane%20County%2C%20Wisconsin)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Dane County<\/a> Circuit Court, winning a permanent injunction blocking it. That injunction still stands, although the state Justice Department has asked the 2nd District Court of Appeals to review the case.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"American Civil Liberties Union\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/a> and the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"League of United Latin American Citizens\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lulac.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">League of United Latin American Citizens<\/a> have filed separate lawsuits challenging the law in federal court. Those suits are still pending.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article further reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>One of the chief authors of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Voter ID laws\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voter_ID_laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">voter ID law<\/a>, Rep. <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Jeff Stone (Wisconsin politician)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stoneleadership.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Jeff Stone<\/a>, R-Greendale, began circulating a new bill last week that would let poor people opt out. That bill is aimed at allaying concerns that requirements in the original bill are too burdensome.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The law requires voters to show either a state-issued <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Identity document\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Identity_document\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">ID card<\/a>, valid driver&#8217;s license, U.S. passport, a student ID that expires within two years or a military ID.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am not impressed by the claim that obtaining a photo ID would be burdensome for some people. You need photo ID for a lot of things today, and a state program to provide photo ID&#8217;s for residents would actually help the residents. You can&#8217;t buy cigarettes or alcoholic beverages without an ID, you can&#8217;t get a book from the library without an ID, you can&#8217;t board a plane without an ID, and if you drive, your license is your ID.
