Yesterday’s Daily Caller<\/a> posted a story that asked the following question:<\/p>\n

…could someone at the IRS have leaked Romney\u2019s tax information to Reid? At the time, Reid claimed he learned of Romney\u2019s tax background from someone who had once been an investor in Romney\u2019s firm, though he wouldn\u2019t say who.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The question arises because it has come to light that for the last two years, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)<\/a> has been targeting conservative groups and leaking confidential information to liberal groups.<\/p>\n

Harry Reid<\/a> used his position as Senate Majority Leader<\/a> to level charges at Mitt Romney<\/a> that would have been impossible to disprove without totally compromising any bit of privacy Governor Romney might have had. In essence, he demanded that Mitt Romney prove a negative. The narrative went something like this:<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Huffington Post<\/a>, Reid claimed he had been called by someone who had invested in Romney\u2019s former firm, Bain Capital<\/a>. That person said Romney didn\u2019t pay taxes for 10 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that\u2019s true? Well, I\u2019m not certain,\u201d Reid told the liberal news outlet. \u201cBut obviously he can\u2019t release those tax returns<\/a>. How would it look?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Romney\u2019s campaign denied Reid\u2019s accusations, eventually releasing a summary of the former Massachusetts governor<\/a>\u2019s taxes that \u2014 according to Romney staffers \u2014 showed he paid taxes over the last 20 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But Reid continued to argue that Romney\u2019s tax returns included something that the Republican didn\u2019t want everyone to see.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s hiding something,\u201d Reid said on a conference call. \u201cHe\u2019s hiding something! It is so evident he\u2019s hiding something!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, I seriously doubt the charges were true. However, since when did investors get to see the tax returns of board members of the companies in which they were investing? If in fact Harry Reid actually knew anything about Mitt Romney’s tax returns<\/a>, where did he get that information?<\/p>\n

Just a note–last year was the first year my husband and I have ever been audited. I am on the membership list of a number of conservative groups that probably have applied for tax exempt status. Hopefully, that is just a coincidence.<\/p>\n
