I think we should make it easy for educated, hard-working people to enter this country without jumping through hoops and spending excessive time and money. However, we have nothing to gain by welcoming people who will be a burden because they do not have the skills to hold down a job and support themselves. At that point immigration becomes another load on an economy that is struggling to move ahead.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Paul Mirengoff\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Mirengoff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Paul Mirengoff<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2013\/05\/heritage-foundation-puts-6-3-trillion-price-tag-on-amnesty.php\">Power Line<\/a> posted an article today detailing the cost of the immigration bill currently under consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The article at Power Line reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/research\/reports\/2013\/05\/the-fiscal-cost-of-unlawful-immigrants-and-amnesty-to-the-us-taxpayer\"> Heritage Foundation<\/a> has released its long awaited study of the cost to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">American<\/a> taxpayers of legalizing the current population of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Illegal immigration\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illegal_immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">illegal immigrants<\/a>. The study, available <a href=\"http:\/\/thf_media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2013\/pdf\/sr133.pdf\"> here<\/a>, estimates the cost at $6.3 trillion, at a minimum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;The bottom line is that current illegal immigrants would receive around $9.4 trillion in government benefits and services over the course of their lifetimes, and would pay about $3.1 trillion in taxes. Hence, a net <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Government budget balance\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government_budget_balance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">fiscal deficit<\/a> of $6.3 trillion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The numbers used in the calculation include such things as <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Social Security (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_Security_%28United_States%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Social Security<\/a>, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Medicare (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medicare_%28United_States%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Medicare<\/a>, food stamps, public housing, public education, and community services such as police and firemen.<\/p>\n<p>Again, I strongly encourage changing the legal immigration system to make it easier for hard-working people who want to work to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Come to America\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Come-America-Terry-Nelsen-Bonner\/dp\/0440010721%3FSubscriptionId%3D0G81C5DAZ03ZR9WH9X82%26tag%3Dzemanta-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0440010721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"amazon\">come to America<\/a>.
