On Thursday CNS News<\/a> reported on one of the more interesting aspects of President Obama’s<\/a> budget<\/a> proposal. The President is encouraging Americans to save for their retirement–as long as they don’t save too much.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s plan to simultaneously compel enrollment in a retirement account<\/a> and prohibit Americans from saving more than what he believes is a \u201creasonable\u201d amount in such an account is published in part of his budget that deals with what the president calls \u201crebalancing the tax code<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the budget would \u201cautomatically\u201d enroll Americans in a retirement account\u2014even if they did not want to enroll\u2014it would allow them to \u201copt out\u201d of actually making contributions to that account.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When did we allow the government to determine what a reasonable amount of retirement savings is?<\/p>\n

The second bullet point in Obama\u2019s plan to \u201crebalance the tax code\u201d is entitled: \u201cProhibit Individuals from Accumulating Over $3 Million in Tax-Preferred Retirement Accounts.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

…The budget says that if this part of Obama’s plan is enacted, the Treasury<\/a> will tax away about $9 billion from American<\/a> savers over the next ten years.<\/strong><\/p>\n
