Wow. Just as the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Real estate economics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Real_estate_economics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">housing market<\/a> is recovering from the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Subprime lending\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wikinvest.com\/concept\/Subprime_lending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikinvest\">sub-prime mortgages<\/a> of the 1990&#8217;s, we are going to add a bunch of risky mortgages to the mix.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In response, administration officials say they are working to get banks to lend to a wider range of borrowers by taking advantage of taxpayer-backed programs \u2014 including those offered by the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Federal Housing Administration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fha.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Federal Housing Administration<\/a> \u2014 that insure home loans against default.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Housing officials are urging the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Department of Justice\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.89325,-77.0249722222&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.89325,-77.0249722222 (United%20States%20Department%20of%20Justice)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Justice Department<\/a> to provide assurances to banks, which have become increasingly cautious, that they will not face legal or financial recriminations if they make loans to riskier borrowers who meet government standards but later default.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem here is the government&#8217;s intervention into the housing market. Banks should be left alone to make their own decisions on issuing loans.<\/p>\n<p>The article further reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Deciding which borrowers get loans might seem like something that should be left up to the private market. But since the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Financial crisis of 2007\u20132008\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Financial_crisis_of_2007%E2%80%932008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">financial crisis in 2008<\/a>, the government has shaped most of the housing market, insuring between 80\u00a0percent and 90\u00a0percent of all new loans, according to the industry publication Inside <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Mortgage loan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mortgage_loan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Mortgage<\/a> <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Finance\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Finance<\/a>.
