{"id":18132,"date":"2013-03-25T11:47:25","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T15:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=18132"},"modified":"2013-03-25T11:53:21","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T15:53:21","slug":"an-unfortunate-choice-of-nominee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=18132","title":{"rendered":"An Unfortunate Choice Of Nominee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2013\/mar\/24\/former-justice-lawyers-wary-of-perezs-nomination-f\/?page=all#pagebreak\">Washington Times<\/a> posted an article stating that present and former justice department attorneys do not support the nomination of <a title=\"United States Assistant Attorney General\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Assistant_Attorney_General\" target=\"_blank\">Assistant Attorney General<\/a> <a title=\"Thomas Perez\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Perez\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas E. Perez<\/a> to be secretary of labor. It seems as if some of Mr. Perez&#8217;s actions as Assistant Attorney General were not in full compliance with the law.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cPeople should be raising serious questions about this nomination,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hans-von-spakovsky\/\">Hans von Spakovsky<\/a>, a veteran <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/department-of-justice\/\">Justice Department<\/a> lawyer who formerly served as counsel to the division. \u201cThis is a man who misled both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/congress\/\">Congress<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/us-commission\/\">U.S. Commission<\/a> on Civil Rights.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cHe was the focus last week of the most devastating indictment of a federal government agency I have even seen,\u201d he added, noting that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/department-of-justice\/\">Justice Department<\/a>\u2019s office of inspector general in a 258-page report documented widespread intimidation, harassment and even threats of violence under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/thomas-e-perez\/\">Mr. Perez<\/a>\u2019s leadership.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0This does not sound like someone we want in charge of the Department of Labor.<\/p>\n<p>This is another part of this story that is deeply troubling.\u00a0 Mr. Perez intervened in a legal case involving the city of <a title=\"Saint Paul, Minnesota\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=44.9441,-93.0852&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=44.9441,-93.0852%20%28Saint%20Paul%2C%20Minnesota%29&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\">St. Paul, Minnesota<\/a>, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. The case involved St. Paul\u2019s agreement to drop its appeal in exchange for an agreement by Justice not to join a fraud lawsuit against the city. The case had the potential to return more than $180 million in damages to the U.S. treasury.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>They (Three House members \u2014 Rep. <a title=\"Darrell Issa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darrell_Issa\" target=\"_blank\">Darrell E. Issa<\/a>, California Republican and chairman of the <a title=\"United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_House_Committee_on_Oversight_and_Government_Reform\" target=\"_blank\">House Oversight and Government Reform Committee<\/a>; Rep. Lamar Smith, Texas Republican and chairman of the House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/judiciary-committee\/\">Judiciary Committee<\/a>; and Rep. <a title=\"Patrick McHenry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patrick_McHenry\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick T. McHenry<\/a>, North Carolina Republican and chairman of the House Oversight financial services subcommittee) said they were \u201cshocked to learn\u201d that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/thomas-e-perez\/\">Mr. Perez<\/a> \u2014 over the objections of career <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/department-of-justice\/\">Justice Department<\/a> attorneys \u2014 had enticed the city to drop its lawsuit that he \u201cdid not want decided by the Supreme Court.\u201d They said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/thomas-e-perez\/\">Mr. Perez<\/a> was concerned that a decision in the city\u2019s favor \u201cwould dry up the massive mortgage lending settlements his division was obtaining by suing banks for housing discrimination based on disparate effects rather than any proof of intent to discriminate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u00a0We have seen this problem in other areas. One of the reason that Congress has not really gone after the big banks is that the fines that can be levied against the banks for various charges are an easy flow of money into the treasury. It doesn&#8217;t seem to occur to them that the ultimate source of that money is the consumer. Another reason Congress hasn&#8217;t done much about the banks is that an investigation of the bank&#8217;s roll in the 2008 collapse would also reveal the part the Congress and the Community Reinvestment Act played in the collapse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0At any rate, Mr. Perez is not a good nominee, and his name should be withdrawn.
