So I know, I\u2019m not afraid of people having <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Gun\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">guns<\/a> who are law abiding citizens. In the analysis of gun <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Murder\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Murder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">murders<\/a> and shootings in my city, I could only find one in the entire time I\u2019ve been mayor \u2013 and unfortunately there have been hundreds and hundreds \u2013 where a person who was involved in a shooting where they had their gun legally, where they legally acquired their gun. The guns that are causing carnage in our cities, my city and our country, every single year are acquired illegally.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Newark, New Jersey, is the second largest city in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New York metropolitan area\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.8086111111,-74.0203861111&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=40.8086111111,-74.0203861111 (New%20York%20metropolitan%20area)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">New York metropolitan area<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Wikipedia<\/a> gives us a picture of crime in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.7166666667,-74.0&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=40.7166666667,-74.0 (New%20York%20City)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">the city<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In 1996, <i><a title=\"Time (magazine)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_%28magazine%29\">Time<\/a><\/i> magazine ranked Newark &#8220;The Most Dangerous City in the Nation.&#8221; By 2007, however, the city recorded a total of 99 homicides for the year, representing a significant drop from the record of 161 murders set in 1981<sup>.<\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-109\"><\/sup> The number of murders in 2008 dropped to 65, a decline of 30% from the previous year and the lowest in the city since 2002 when there were also 65 murders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In 2011, Newark recorded 90 homicides, after experiencing 86 homicides in 2010. Overall, there was a 6% increase in crime numbers over the previous year, including a rise in <a title=\"Carjackings\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carjackings\">carjackings<\/a> for the third straight year. Along with the increase in crime, the <a title=\"Newark Police Department\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newark_Police_Department\">Newark Police Department<\/a> increased its recovery of illegally owned guns in 2011 to 696, up from 278 in 2010.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>After being forced to lay off 162 officers due to economic reasons in 2010, the NPD was able to rehire eight of those officers in 2012, with plans for another 17 rehires later in the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mayor Booker was elected in 2006. He is an inspiring mayor to watch&#8211;recently he rescued a young woman from a burning building and came to the aid of a dog that had been left out in the extreme cold.
