The government had attempted to take the motel away from the Caswell family, claiming that the motel facilitated drug crimes.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;But the court found that Mr. Caswell \u201cdid not know the guests involved in the drug crimes, did not know of their anticipated <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Crime\" href=\"http:\/\/www.break.com\/c\/people-lifestyle-videos\/crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"break\">criminal behavior<\/a> at the time they registered as guests, and did not know of the drug crimes while they were occurring.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cThis outrageous forfeiture <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Combat Videos\" href=\"http:\/\/www.break.com\/topics\/combat-videos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"break\">action<\/a> should never have been filed in the first place,\u201d said Larry Salzman, an <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"IJ (bay)\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=52.3808333333,4.94388888889&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=52.3808333333,4.94388888889 (IJ%20%28bay%29)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">IJ<\/a> attorney.\u00a0 \u201cWhat the government did amounted to little more than a grab for what they saw as quick cash under the guise of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Asset forfeiture\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asset_forfeiture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">civil forfeiture<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Caswell said, \u201cI couldn\u2019t have fought this fight without the help of the Institute for Justice.\u00a0 It is hard to believe anything like this goes on in our country, but the government goes after people they think can\u2019t afford to fight.\u00a0 But with IJ\u2019s help, we put up a heck of a fight and have won.\u00a0 The public needs to stand up against these <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Abuse\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">abuses of power<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is encouraging to see that the Caswells won their case and that there was an organization willing to stand with them to fight government overreach.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; height: 15px;\"><a class=\"zemanta-pixie-a\" title=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zemanta.com\/?px\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" style=\"border: none; float: right;\" alt=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/zemified_e.png?x-id=30f657d1-9d50-4ebd-8a50-fdb96365f0bc\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday the Institute for Justice website posted an article about the Motel Caswell, a family-run motel in Tewksbury.
