Its origin is uncertain&#8211;it is sometimes credited to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Armed Forces\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Armed_Forces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">U. S. Military<\/a> Chaplain William T. Cummings during the Battle of Bataan and sometimes credited to Ernie Pyle. That information is from Wikipedia, so keep that in mind.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, it seems that at the present time Christians may not be allowed in foxholes. <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/army-removes-crosses-steeple-from-chapel.html\">Fox News<\/a> reported yesterday that the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Christian symbolism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_symbolism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Christian symbols<\/a> have been removed from the chapel at <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Forward operating base\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forward_operating_base\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Forward Operating Base<\/a> Orgun-E in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>The article quotes a letter that <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"American Atheists\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atheists.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">American Atheists president<\/a> David Silverman sent to the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"The Pentagon\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8709888889,-77.0559611111&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8709888889,-77.0559611111 (The%20Pentagon)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Pentagon<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cSoldiers with minority religious beliefs and atheists often feel like second-class citizens when Christianity is seemingly officially endorsed by their own base,\u201d Silverman told Fox News. \u201cWe are very happy the Pentagon and the Army decided to do the right thing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I thought religious freedom was one of the things our military was defending. The military takes an oath to defend the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Constitution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">U. S. Constitution<\/a> which supports freedom of religion. I am sorry if a soldier was offended by the cross, but the Constitution does not tell him that he has the right not to be offended. Is he also offended by the Star of David or the Crescent Moon? Guess what? I really don&#8217;t care. Christianity is a part of the heritage of our country and of our military. There is no reason to strip our bases of that heritage.<\/p>\n<p>The article posted one reaction to the move:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Christian cleansing brought condemnation from religious liberty advocates like <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tony Perkins (politician)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Perkins_%28politician%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Tony Perkins<\/a>, president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frc.org\">Family Research Council.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cUnder this Administration, the military has become a Christianity-free zone,\u201d Perkins told Fox News. \u201cAs a veteran, there\u2019s an irony here. You put on the uniform to defend freedom \u2014 chief among them is freedom of religion. And yet, you are stripped of your own freedom to practice your faith.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cThis is not about imposing religion on a people we\u2019ve freed from oppression,\u201d Perkins said. \u201cThis is about American soldiers having the ability to practice their own faith.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article concludes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cMy personal feeling is that it is a direct attack against Christianity and Judaism,\u201d one soldier told Fox News. \u201cWhen you look at the regulation and you notice the four items directly quoted are crosses, crucifixes, the Star of David and the Menorah.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Army regulation makes no specific mention of the wheel of Dharma, Pentagram, Pentacle, Star and Crescent or the Yin and Yang symbol, he noted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>And while Christian symbols are being removed from chapels, there has been at least one instance of a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Rainbow flag (LGBT movement)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rainbow_flag_%28LGBT_movement%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">gay pride flag<\/a> being raised at a base in Afghanistan. <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/military-investigating-gay-pride-flag.html\">Click here to read our original story.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Photographs purporting to show the rainbow flag flying over the base stirred widespread debate after it was posted on Facebook.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not a good path for America to be traveling.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; height: 15px;\"><a class=\"zemanta-pixie-a\" title=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zemanta.com\/?px\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" style=\"border: none; float: right;\" alt=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/zemified_e.png?x-id=542afa17-c9f2-4aad-b38e-b1f897f2539f\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The statement &#8220;There are no atheists in foxholes&#8221; came out of World War II.
