{"id":17088,"date":"2013-01-10T19:56:39","date_gmt":"2013-01-11T00:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=17088"},"modified":"2013-01-10T19:56:39","modified_gmt":"2013-01-11T00:56:39","slug":"improper-unemployment-payments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=17088","title":{"rendered":"Improper Unemployment Payments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/labor-dept-reports-5-billion-improper-unemployment-insurance-payments\">CNS News<\/a> posted a story about $5,159,629,434 in improper <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Unemployment benefits\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unemployment_benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">unemployment insurance<\/a> <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Payment\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Payment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">payments<\/a> for all 50 states, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Territories of the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Territories_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">U.S. territories<\/a> and the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Washington, D.C.\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8951111111,-77.0366666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=38.8951111111,-77.0366666667 (Washington%2C%20D.C.)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">District of Columbia<\/a> for the period July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The data is included in a chart on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/dol\/maps\/map-ipia.htm#.UO9h1KzNkS9\">Department of Labor<\/a> (DOL) website.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The DOL outlines its \u201ccore strategies to reduce improper payments\u201d and other actions it is taking to improve performance at the state level, including providing funding to the states.\u00a0 (See <a href=\"http:\/\/cnsnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/TOP%20Document.pdf\">TOP Document.pdf<\/a> )<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cOn Sept. 27, 2012 the Department announced the award of approximately $169 million in supplemental budget requests (SBRs) to 33 states for projects related to program integrity and performance to address their root causes most likely to quickly reduce improper payments.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think fraud is the biggest problem with unemployment insurance. Now that unemployment benefits can be collected for more than a year, how much incentive do people have to look for work during that year? The fraud in the payments needs to be addressed, but so does the length of time benefits can be collected.
