The American Congress<\/a> has done it again. In an effort to save the environment, they have put American<\/a> households at risk. Hot Air<\/a> posted an article yesterday stating that a study done at Long Island<\/a>‘s Stony Brook has shown that compact fluorescent lights (CFLs<\/a>) emit high levels of ultra violet radiation<\/a>. The report states that the bulbs<\/a> emit rays so strong that they can actually burn skin and skin cells.<\/p>\n

The article at Hot Air reports:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe results were that you could actually initiate cell death,\u201d said Marcia Simon, a Professor of Dermatology.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Exposure to the bulbs could lead to premature aging and skin cancer<\/a>, according to doctors.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt can also cause skin cancer in the deadliest form, and that\u2019s melanoma,\u201d said Dr. Rebecca Tung.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The article points out that in every bulb the researchers tested they found that the protective coating around the light creating \u2018phosphor\u2019 was cracked, allowing dangerous ultraviolet rays to escape. This sounds like a quality control problem in the manufacturing process as much as anything else.<\/p>\n

The radiation problem is in addition to the danger caused by actually breaking a bulb in your home.<\/p>\n

Actually, they\u2019re not all that eco-friendly, as even the government acknowledges.\u00a0 The EPA<\/a> wants to argue<\/a> that the release of mercury from CFLs in disposal is less than that released from the burning of the amount of coal one saves by using them.\u00a0 That may well be true overall<\/em>, but not if one breaks in your house.\u00a0 At that point, you need to conduct an hours-long cleanup<\/a> \u2014 and even if you want to dispose of an unbroken CFL<\/a>, it takes special disposal in most jurisdictions<\/a> due to the eco-un<\/em>friendly nature of CFLs.<\/strong><\/p>\n
