{"id":16128,"date":"2012-10-29T06:38:53","date_gmt":"2012-10-29T10:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=16128"},"modified":"2012-10-29T06:38:53","modified_gmt":"2012-10-29T10:38:53","slug":"searching-for-the-truth-about-delphi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=16128","title":{"rendered":"Searching For The Truth About Delphi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/the-delphi-legacy\/\">Washington Free Beacon<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2012\/10\/28\/documents-treasury-officials-held-2009-backroom-bailout-meeting-on-delphi-pension-plans\/\">Daily Caller<\/a> have both posted articles about how the bailout of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Automotive industry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Automotive_industry\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">automobile industry<\/a> was handled in regard to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Archaeological Site of Delphi\" href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/393\" rel=\"unesco\" target=\"_blank\">Delphi<\/a>, a company which supplies electronics and technology to the auto industry.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"The Daily Caller\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Daily_Caller\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">The Daily Caller<\/a> posted an article stating that the decision to end the pensions of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Nonunion\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nonunion\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">non-union<\/a>\u00a0 workers at Delphi was not made independently by the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.9022222222,-77.0286111111&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.9022222222,-77.0286111111 (Pension%20Benefit%20Guaranty%20Corporation)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation<\/a> (PBGC), the federal government agency that handles private-sector pension benefits issues, but that the decision was the result of pressure from the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Department of the Treasury\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8983333333,-77.0341666667&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8983333333,-77.0341666667 (United%20States%20Department%20of%20the%20Treasury)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Treasury Department<\/a>. They have uncovered a chain of e-mails that backs up this conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The email chain was titled \u201cDelphi Hourly Plan.\u201d Delphi\u2019s unionized hourly retirees originally saw their <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Pension\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pension\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">pension plans<\/a> terminated together with the nonunion Delphi salaried retirees\u2019 plans in a process that commenced on July 31, 2009.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Later, in September 2009, the union retirees\u2019 plans were topped up while nonunion retirees\u2019 plans remained terminated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"itxthook3\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u00a0These emails contradict July 2012\u00a0congressional testimony Feldman (Treasury official Matt Feldman) gave during an investigation by the subcommittee on TARP, Financial Services and Bailouts of Public and Private Programs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The treatment of Delphi employees is becoming a campaign issue in Ohio, where many of its employees were located. Paul Ryan met with nine Delphi retirees who lost their pensions, while their union coworkers pensions were untouched.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Free Beacon explains some of the details of the bailout:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Delphi was an important element of the auto-bailout. The company, one of GM\u2019s largest parts suppliers, had been in bankruptcy since 2005 and Treasury officials recognized that it would need to be lifted from bankruptcy along with GM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>To cut costs, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), an independent federal insurer of retirement systems, terminated the nonunion plan while GM volunteered $1 billion to top-off pensions belonging to the United Autoworkers union.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The administration has contended that GM was acting on a 1999 agreement with the union to close any pension gap that emerged if Delphi declared bankruptcy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>That agreement, however, was liquidated when GM itself entered bankruptcy and <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/general-motors-is-alive-for-now\/\">emerged as a new company<\/a>, according to bankruptcy expert <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Todd Zywicki\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Todd_Zywicki\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Todd Zywicki<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201c<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"General Motors\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gm.com\" rel=\"homepage\" target=\"_blank\">General Motors<\/a>\u2019 decision to guarantee the obligations of a separate company\u2014Delphi\u2014was completely unjustified under established principles of bankruptcy law, and it increased the cost of the taxpayer bailout of the automotive industry by more than $1 billion with no reciprocal benefit to General Motors,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mercatus.org\/publication\/administrations-auto-bailouts-and-delphi-pension-decisions-who-picked-winners-and-losers\" target=\"_blank\">he told Congress in July.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Automotive industry crisis of 2008\u20132010\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Automotive_industry_crisis_of_2008%E2%80%932010\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">auto industry bailout<\/a> is an example of the government interfering with the laws of bankruptcy and acting in total disregard to the law.
