Yesterday CNS News<\/a> reported that despite President Obama’s<\/a> statement on Thursday that \u201cwe got back every dime we used to rescue the financial system<\/a>,” the Congressional Budget Office<\/a> (CBO) has stated that the government\u00a0will lose\u00a0about $24 billion on the bailout.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, President Obama stated, \u201cWe got back every dime we used to rescue the financial system, but we also passed a historic law to end taxpayer-funded Wall Street<\/a> bailouts<\/a> for good.\u201d<\/p>\n

The article reports the CBO’s statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cost to the federal government of the TARP<\/a>\u2019s transactions (also referred to as the subsidy cost), including grants for mortgage programs that have not yet been made, will amount to $24 billion,\u201d said the CBO report, which was\u00a0released on\u00a0the same day Obama spoke.<\/strong><\/p>\n

…CBO said that the cost of TARP \u201cstems largely from assistance to American International Group (AIG<\/a>), aid to the automotive industry<\/a>, and grant programs aimed at avoiding home mortgage<\/a> foreclosures,\u201d noting that the losses will be so large they will eclipse the financial gains the government will realize from bailing out other large financial institutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n
