First we need to realize that it happened on September 11, 2012. Second we need to note that the American Embassy in Libya was not protected in the same way that American <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Diplomatic mission\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diplomatic_mission\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Embassies<\/a> overseas are usually protected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2012\/09\/12\/report-u-s-consulate-in-benghazi-had-no-marine-protection\/\">Hot Air<\/a> reported yesterday:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The consulate where the American ambassador to Libya was killed on Tuesday is an \u201cinterim facility\u201d not protected by the contingent of Marines that safeguards embassies, POLITICO has learned\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A senior administration official Wednesday called the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Benghazi\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=32.1166666667,20.0666666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=32.1166666667,20.0666666667 (Benghazi)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Benghazi<\/a> consulate \u201can interim facility,\u201d which the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Department of State\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8941666667,-77.0483333333&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8941666667,-77.0483333333 (United%20States%20Department%20of%20State)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">State Department<\/a> began using \u201cbefore the fall of Qadhafi.\u201d It was staffed Tuesday by Libyan and State Department security officers. The consulate came under fire from heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades at about 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday. By the time the attack ended several hours later, four Americans were dead and three others had been injured.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Benghazi consulate had \u201clock-and-key\u201d security, not the same level of defenses as a formal embassy, an intelligence source told POLITICO. That means it had no bulletproof glass, reinforced doors or other features common to embassies. The intelligence source contrasted it with the American embassy in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Cairo\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=30.0580555556,31.2288888889&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=30.0580555556,31.2288888889 (Cairo)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Cairo, Egypt<\/a> \u2013 \u201ca permanent facility, which is a lot easier to defend.\u201d The Cairo embassy also was attacked Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It gets worse. <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Michael Rubin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Rubin\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Rubin<\/a> posted an article at the <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2012\/09\/12\/what-really-motivated-the-embassy-attacks\/\">Daily Caller<\/a> explaining how demonstrations in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Muslim world\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muslim_world\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Islamic countries<\/a> work:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The idea that the riots were spontaneous shows detachment from the reality of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Middle East\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_East\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Middle East<\/a>. Dozens of heavily armed and murderous Islamists sacking embassies are not flash mobs of teenagers converging on a mall food court. When I lived in pre-war Iraq, the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Iran\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=35.6833333333,51.4166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=35.6833333333,51.4166666667 (Iran)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Islamic Republic of Iran<\/a>, and Yemen, my students and colleagues often spoke of how they had been informed by government representatives where to board buses to attend \u201cspontaneous\u201d rallies to be held the following day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He concludes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The war on terrorism and, more specifically, the fight against Islamist radicalism, is an ideological battle. The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a>, moderate Muslims, and those valuing freedom and liberty must triumph not only on the battlefield, but also in the classroom and on the airwaves.
