Yesterday’s Washington Examiner<\/a> posted an article about a recent statement by Senator Harry Reid<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Senator Reid stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cHis poor father must be so embarrassed about his son,\u201d Reid said, in reference to George Romney<\/a>\u2019s standard-setting decision to turn over 12 years of tax returns<\/a> when he ran for president in the late 1960s. Saying he had \u201cno problem with somebody being really, really wealthy,\u201d Reid sat up in his chair a bit before stirring the pot further. A month or so ago, he said, a person who had invested with Bain Capital called his office.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHarry, he didn\u2019t pay any taxes<\/a> for 10 years,\u201d Reid recounted the person as saying.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that\u2019s true? Well, I\u2019m not certain,\u201d said Reid. \u201cBut obviously he can\u2019t release those tax returns. How would it look?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou guys have said his wealth is $250 million,\u201d Reid went on. \u201cNot a chance in the world. It\u2019s a lot more than that. I mean, you do pretty well if you don\u2019t pay taxes for 10 years when you\u2019re making millions and millions of dollars.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are a number of obvious problems with this statement. First of all, the article asks, “How would an investor in Bain Capital have access to Governor Romney’s tax returns?” Secondly, do you honestly believe that a public figure (as Governor Romney was after the Olympics) who earned the kind of money that Governor Romney earned would not have had his tax returns examined very carefully by the IRS.<\/p>\n

The article also reminds us:<\/p>\n

And in what Romney has released of his tax returns, he paid<\/a> $6.2 million in taxes over two years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the lowest form of sleaze so far in the campaign.<\/p>\n
