Evidently, the conventional wisdom is that <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Hillary Clinton\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/hillary-clinton-9251306\" rel=\"biographycom\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> will step down in order to run for President in 2016. <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"John Kerry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/1008257-john_kerry\" rel=\"rottentomatoes\" target=\"_blank\">Senator John Kerry<\/a> is the expected replacement.<\/p>\n<p>An editorial in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"The Globe and Mail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/\" rel=\"homepage\" target=\"_blank\">Globe and Mail<\/a> by Yossi Klein Halevi related the following story:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Last year, I was part of a group of Israelis who met in Jerusalem with Massachusetts Senator John Kerry. Mr. Kerry had just come from Damascus with excellent news: Bashar al-Assad was ready for peace with <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Israel\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=31.7833333333,35.2166666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=31.7833333333,35.2166666667 (Israel)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Israel<\/a>. When one of the participants mentioned that demonstrations had begun to challenge Mr. Assad\u2019s legitimacy, Mr. Kerry\u2019s response was: All the more reason to negotiate while he\u2019s still in power. In other words: Israel had the golden opportunity to give up the strategic <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Golan Heights\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=32.9816666667,35.7494444444&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=32.9816666667,35.7494444444 (Golan%20Heights)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Golan Heights<\/a> to a dictator who might be deposed by a popular revolution, which might or might not recognize whatever peace agreement he signed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>That kind of wishful thinking has resulted in Western policy toward the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Middle East\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_East\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Middle East<\/a> that is strategically incoherent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>A second term of President Obama would be a nightmare both domestically and internationally.
