On June 24, the tax on a pack of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Cigarette\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cigarette\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">cigarettes<\/a> will increase by $1. Some convenience stores are running low on cigarettes because customers who usually come in to buy one carton are currently buying two or three in order to save the $20 or $40 dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>As\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/business\/Smokers-Stock-Up-In-Preparation-For-Cig-Tax-158599075.html#ixzz1xsPn62gY\">NBC Chicago<\/a>\u00a0reports, a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Cook County, Illinois\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.8,-87.7166666667&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=41.8,-87.7166666667 (Cook%20County%2C%20Illinois)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Cook County, Illinois<\/a>, cigarette tax hike earlier this year is to blame for an alleged 15 to 20 percent drop in business at one <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Illinois\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.0,-89.0&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=40.0,-89.0 (Illinois)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Illinois<\/a> <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tobacco\" href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/tobacco\" rel=\"historycom\" target=\"_blank\">tobacco<\/a> retailer, adding that <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Indiana\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.0,-86.0&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=40.0,-86.0 (Indiana)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana<\/a> sellers could substantially gain from the latest increase:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;After March 1 when Cook County raised their <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tax\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tax\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">taxes<\/a>, I\u00a0lost about&#8211;between 15 to 20 percent of my business,&#8221; Illinois tobacco shop owner Jawad Muqeet said. &#8220;The prices are so high nobody wants to buy cigarettes in downtown&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Indiana tobacco sellers could gain from the this increase. Hammond smoke shop owner Roni Patel says a carton of Marlboro cigarettes costs $56 on average in Indiana, compared to $50 in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Will County, Illinois\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.44,-87.98&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=41.44,-87.98 (Will%20County%2C%20Illinois)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\">Will County, Illinois<\/a>.
