Do Parents Have Rights?

Under the Biden administration’s policies, there are some real questions as to what the actual rights of parents are.

On Saturday, The Daily Wire posted the following headline:

‘These Are Our Kids, They Belong To All Of Us’: Three Times The Left Trampled On Parental Authority This Past Week Alone

These are the examples cited in the article:

“There are more than 600 pieces of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation out there,” Jean-Pierre said at the GLAAD Media Awards. “A few hundred of them are anti-trans communities, and that matters because we have to call that out. And we’ve never seen this level. It’s historic in the number of pieces of legislation.”

Perhaps the response is “historic” because it seems like the Left is attempting to convince the world that child mutilation is good and changing “genders” is real for the first time in history en masse.

Regardless, Jean-Pierre continued, “I’ve met a lot of parents of trans kids in the past couple of months who have told me these devastating stories, whether they’re in Texas or Oklahoma or wherever they are, saying how they now have to seriously consider leaving their state to protect their child. That’s something that we have to call out and continue to be very clear about. These are kids. These are our kids. They belong to all of us.“ (emphasis added)

If these kids belong to all of us, how come no one ever offered to pay for my kids’ braces?

The article continues with two more examples:

Friday afternoon, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona tweeted, “Teachers know what is best for their kids because they are with them every day. We must trust teachers.” (emphasis added)

And finally:

But let’s check in on one teacher, a member of the public servant class that serves as the supposed voice of wisdom as praised by Cardona. Jenna Barbee, a fifth-grade teacher in Florida’s Hernando County School District, had some thoughts on when parental rights start and end this week.

Florida has a parental rights law that now bans education on gender identity and sexual orientation unless it is related to the curriculum. Barbee recently decided to show a film featuring LGBTQ themes. Parents obviously took umbrage with that — arguing it’s not Barbee’s job to teach that sort of stuff.

“What she’s missing and what these parents are missing is that they’re not in the school system,” Barbee said in response. “These conversations, these doors that she’s talking about, telling me that I’m stripping her rights as a parent — those rights are gone when your child is in the public school system because there are students talking about these things.”

Well, no parental rights end just because their children step into a public school.

Please take your children out of public school–right now it’s not a good place!

Explaining The Unexplainable

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was again put in the position of defending something that is indefensible. On Saturday, Townhall posted an article about the most recent statement by President Biden that the Press Secretary has to walk back.

The article reports:

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre released a statement Saturday afternoon in an effort to walk back President Joe Biden’s remarks Friday.

During a campaign stop in California, Biden said, “We’re gonna be shutting these plants down all across America, and having wind and solar.” Jean-Pierre claims Biden’s words, which have simply been quoted and replayed, are being “twisted.”

I really don’t think the words are being “twisted.” I think what the President said is pretty clear and aligns with his actions while he has been in office.

The article continues:

“The President’s remarks yesterday have been twisted to suggest a meaning that was not intended; he regrets it if anyone hearing these remarks took offense. The President was commenting on a fact of economics and technology: as it has been from its earliest days as an energy superpower, America is once again in the midst of an energy transition. Our goal as a nation is to combat climate change and increase our energy security by producing clean and efficient American energy,” the statement says. “He is determined to make sure that this transition helps all Americans in all parts of the country, with more jobs and better opportunities; it’s a commitment he has advanced since Day One. No one will be left behind.”

Senator Manchin is not convinced.

On Saturday, The Conservative Treehouse noted:

Yesterday, Joe Biden declared that all coal-fired electricity plants in the U.S would be shut down, saying, “we’re going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar.”

Today, West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin, the senator who gave Joe Biden the vote he needed for the ‘inflation reduction act’ also known as the climate change investment act that will eliminate all oil, coal and natural gas development, pretends to act surprised that Joe Biden will destroy the West Virginia coal mining industry.

Didn’t the Senator read the bill?

It’s Just Different!

There were some comments made this week by the Mayor of Washington, D.C., about the influx of illegal immigrants arriving in her city from Texas. The Democrat party has pretty much condemned the actions of Texas Governor Abbott in busing illegal immigrants to Washington (although many of us believe that is the perfect solution). On July 28, I reported on recent statements by New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser complaining about the influx of illegal immigrants to their cities. This is a problem our border states have been dealing with for the past eighteen months. In that article I mentioned the late-night flights our government is providing to move illegal immigrants from the border to a suburban airport north of New York City.

On Saturday, The American Thinker posted an article describing how White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre replied when asked what the difference was between the government’s late-night flights and Governor Abbott’s busing the illegal immigrants to Washington, D.C.

The article reports:

REPORTER: “What’s the difference between Texas busing migrants to DC, and the federal government flying migrants to, say New York, in the middle of the night?”

KJP: “It’s very different, because we’re not using migrants as a political pawn.”

…So, when they do it, it’s an altruistic action intended to share with Americans the good fortune to have their communities flooded with illiterate, unskilled people, many of whom are cartel members, and all of whom are here illegally, speak no English, and come for the welfare seeded into American communities. But when Texas, with a completely broken, dangerous border, shares this bounty of humanity with D.C., those same people become political pawns. Many were quick to spot the hypocrisy (hat tip: Twitchy)…

The article concludes:

That she (Karine Jean-Pierre) is the communication face of the Biden administration is open to several interpretations. First, we are being governed by half-wits, which is bad. Second, we are governed by people who believe the American people are half-wits, which is worse.

And then there’s the third, and worst, possible conclusion: We are governed by people who couldn’t care less about what Americans think. This means that, looking ahead to the elections, the Biden administration is confident that it’s got the systems locked up so tightly that, even if the American people push back a bit in November, come the 2024 election, we’ll see a solid repeat of what happened in 2020—namely, an election that Republicans cannot possibly win, whether in the White House or in Congress.

Labels Matter

On Sunday, John Hinderaker posted an article at Power Line Blog about the double standard used in reporting protests.

The article notes:

The Left has a rather schizophrenic attitude toward protests and demonstrations. Some are wonderful, like the George Floyd riots, which were not, in fact, protests at all. Or like arson and other destruction committed at pro-life facilities. Others are detestable, like the Dutch farmers’ protests, or the French “yellow vests,” or the Canadian truckers. Some protests, too, can only be ignored, like when hundreds of thousands of pro-life citizens show up for their annual march in Washington.

Currently the Left is “demonstrating” against the Supreme Court justices who concurred in the Dobbs decision. A few nights ago, as Scott has noted, left-wingers harassed Justice Brett Kavanaugh and other diners at the Morton’s steak house in D.C. Liberals viewed this effort as a triumph–Kavanaugh reportedly had to exit out a back door–and a pro-Democratic Party organization is now offering cash bounties to anyone who sees a conservative justice out in public in time for a flash mob to assemble.

When asked about such tactics, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was nonplussed. These are peaceful demonstrations, she replied, the very essence of democracy!

Creating an intimidating environment for political opponents is a sign of a tyrannical government. Protesting political figures at private locations that have nothing to do with their jobs is a form of intimidation.

The article concludes:

And, of course, all of this discussion takes place in the context of at least one assassination attempt against Justice Kavanaugh, the same man who was falsely and relentlessly smeared by the Democratic Party during his confirmation hearings. I think the leaders of the Democratic Party are well aware that their over-the-top attacks on conservative justices, and the kinds of harassment we have seen in recent days, are likely to lead to more assassination attempts. I think leaders of the Democratic Party hope that one or more conservative justices will be assassinated while Joe Biden is still (at least nominally) president, so that he can appoint a left-wing successor. I think this is why Attorney General Merrick Garland refuses to enforce 18 U.S.C. § 1507, which bans demonstrations at the homes of judges that attempt to influence their decisions. And I think this is why the Biden administration cheers on the mobs who harass conservatives in public places.

If this assessment seems harsh, ask yourself: what other hypothesis is consistent with the Democrats’ actions?

So, are protests and demonstrations good or bad? I think they are good–that is to say, consistent with our Constitution’s framework of ordered liberty–when they are peaceful (not “mostly peaceful”), when they are conducted in public places with proper permitting, and when they do not explicitly or implicitly threaten anyone. Citizens have a right to assemble peaceably, not to form themselves into mobs. They do not have a right to commit mayhem, to destroy property, or to threaten, menace, or unreasonably inconvenience others. Unfortunately, the “protests” that the Left likes most usually fall in the latter category. Let’s just hope they don’t result in even more catastrophic violence than we have already witnessed.

So far, the violence we have witnessed seems to be mainly on the liberal side–January 6th was not a totally peaceful protest, but did not include lighting fires, burning business, throwing molotov cocktails into police cars, or killing those trying to protect their businesses. If the violence on the political left, including antifa, BLM, etc., is not reined in, I fear that there will be violent pushback from the political right. That is a recipe for the destruction of America.

A New Level Of Spin

On Thursday, The Conservative Treehouse posted an article about some recent statements by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. The statements would be comical if the subject were not so serious.

The article reports:

It is also obvious to those who have followed Biden personnel decisions, that KJP was selected because she would spout the information given to her by Chief-of-Staff Ron Klain without a moment’s hesitation.  She is not intelligent enough to know the talking points are complete nonsense.  She spouts the most ridiculous talking points in a manner that reflects she believes them.  That said, her capacity to stumble through nonsense and pretend it is real is only surpassed by Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg.

Today from the White House podium, Ms. Karine Jean-Pierre actually made the claim that our current economy is the strongest in our nation’s history.

WATCH:

It’s a great economy as long as you don’t have to buy food, gasoline, electricity, or pay for a place to live.
